EXAMINATION OF AN EDUCATIONAL WIKI SITE

A Wiki can simply be defined as a tool which is web-based and allows users to collaborate by modifying, adding or deleting content within the web browser (Unit 4, EDTK2030).  It is for this reason that they can be useful for teachers collaborations and even posting educational activities.

The Wiki that I found is called Vikidia.  It is geared toward eight to thirteen year olds who need to research topics within their curriculum. A wide range of topics are available to cover many subjects such as Science, Agriculture, English, Literature and other fun topics for the curious child.

Meishar-Tal (2015) gave an idea of the features surrounding a good wiki to be used in education. The purpose of this wiki and the intended users are clearly stated.  There are a plethora of topics covered in good detail which can be useful for children at the age of 8 and above finding research with respect to current curriculum. A list of active contributors and their hierarchy is available to see the structure used to manage and maintain the wiki.  The creator and moderators of the wiki can also be found.  The articles I viewed were well referenced and updates have been made within the last three months.  The wiki has the additional feature that children doing research are able to download or print information they find. New articles and recent changes to established articles can easily be seen and viewed.  One fallback is that I think they layout of the wiki could be a bit challenging for an eight year old, but I can see older children manoeuvring with ease.
