THE CONCEPT OF CONVERGENCE AS IT APPLIES TO ICT

Source: Wix.com
Introduction
Convergence is a process in which two or more different types of technology and communication are combined to form one system. Some examples of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are the television, computers, tablets, telephones, cell phones, radios and the internet. These various forms of technology along with other external resources are used to manage information, for communication purposes, to develop and back-up information. When these technologies are combined, they take on a whole new role in assimilating information and open doors to new ways of creating content (Kim, Kim, & Koh, 2014).
Sample Lesson Plan
Subject: Science Theme: My Body
Sub Theme: Functions of body parts Age Group: 4-5 year olds
Lesson Duration: 25 Minutes Date of Lesson: 16th September, 2020
Material Needed: Laptop, Internet, Digital Whiteboard
Prior Knowledge: Children already know the names of each part of the body
Learning Objective: After class discussion, online group work and watching youtube video, students will be able to:
-
Knowledge: State and understand the functions of each body part
-
Skill: They will be able to recognise functions their body parts complete everyday
Assessment: Children will be given a digital quiz to select picture representations of functions of the body and which body part pictures it matches with.
Attitude: Children will understand why each function is important to our everyday lives
Process
BALL OF ENERGY - WARM UP GAME (3 Minutes)
1). The teacher will start by hitting the ball of energy to one child and calling their name. That child will catch the ball and then throw it to another child calling their name. This helps children learn each other's names.
DISCUSSION WITH VISUALS ON THE DIGITAL WHITEBOARD - Function of the Body Parts (10 Minutes)
-
As a class, the teacher and children will discuss pictures of parts of the body and will share what each part of the body is used for.
Youtube Video (3 minutes)
-
My amazing Body - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8AsYElycIY
-
The children will be asked to stand and dance with the video as they continue to learn about their amazing bodies.
Assessment:
ACTIVITY ON DIGITAL WHITEBOARD - Parts of the body (10 Minutes)
-
Pictures of parts of the body are on one side of the board and that human body on the other.
-
The children must draw lines from the part of the body to where it is found on the human body.
Conclusion
The benefits to convergence in education as we enter into a whole new era of integrated online learning as a result of COVID 19 are clear. Many different sources of media are being utilized to impart lessons to different demographics around the world with an effort to ensure no student is left behind. Print, television, radio and use of online platforms are just some of the avenues being explored by teachers and students alike. Proper integration of many modes of media, all working together with one goal in mind is helping to educate the youth of the nation and by extension the world (United Nations, 2020).
